A Guide to Rallycross Numbers

You have probably seen numbers plastered to the sides of all the cars at all the rally events accompanied by a letter combo; while they look pretty cool, these numbers are not just for show. Having your number and class on the sides of your car is required to compete. It is how the timing and scoring team keep track of your times and penalties.

The numbers/letters must be displayed in a clearly visible way on the driver and passenger side of the vehicle. Most competitors affix the numbers to the doors but you can also place them on the windows.

Your numbers will be verified at tech inspection and driver check-in. Make sure to read up on the vehicle inspection section of the Rallycross rules prior to the event.

Number specifics:

  • Size: Characters must be at least 6” tall with a stroke width of 1”

  • Color: Characters must be a contrasting color to their background. For example, a black car should have white or light numbers. A white car should have black or dark numbers.

You will see a variety of number styles at the events, but the only permitted number types are vinyl sticker (available at your local office supply store) or magnetic. Shoe polish and tape numbers will NOT be accepted!

Make sure your numbers are in the correct format, being, number then class. For example, car number 3 racing in Modified Front class should be “3 MF.” Use this guide to determine the right abbreviation for your class.

Unique Numbers: You must select a number that is not already in use. Check out the list of available numbers to see what your options are. When you go to register for an event, have a few options handy so that you don’t lose precious time signing up.

Feel free to have as much fun with your numbers as you’d like, we have seen some amazing designs and look forward to seeing what you come up with. If you have any questions, send them our way! We're always happy to help.
